The League of Milwaukee Artists (LMA) was founded in 1944.[1] The original members of the LMA were local artists Ted Kraynik, Rosemary Kraynik, Annette Hirsch, Jack Weaver, Jack Madison, Mary Gerstein, Jack Friedman, Sam Bernfeldt, Dick Ells, Clarence Bohn, and Melvin Tess, but its most famous founder was the acclaimed artist Fred Berman.[2] Friedman served as the organization’s first president. Since its formation, the LMA has been one of the most important art associations in the area, due to the League’s ability to foster relationships between local artists and the community and its promotion of art and artistic expression in Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin.[3]
To qualify for a membership, an artist must be a Milwaukee resident and age eighteen years or older. The artist must work in oil painting, watercolor, drawing, pen and ink calligraphy, sculpting, collage design, assemblage, or photography.[4] The League regularly puts on exhibitions, events, and educational seminars. It has held events and classes that include tutorials on watercolor painting, drawing, and how to paint on a canvas. The themes of each class and event range from techniques and styles to painting as a way to express individuality or emotion.[5] They are held throughout Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin at churches, art fairs, and local art museums. The LMA offers these classes to adults and children in order to promote art and artistic expression in Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin.[6]
