Lead Editors

Amanda Seligman is Professor of History and Urban Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she has taught since 1999. Her publications include Chicago’s Block Clubs: How Neighbors Shape the City (2016), Is Graduate School Really for You?: The Whos, Whats, Hows, and Whys of Pursuing a Master’s or PhD (2012), Block by Block: Neighborhoods and Public Policy on Chicago’s West Side (2005), and the prize-winning article “But Burn—No”: The Rest of the Crowd in Three Civil Disorders in 1960s Chicago (The Journal of Urban History, 2011).

Margo Anderson is Distinguished Professor Emerita of History & Urban Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She specializes in American social, urban and women’s history. Her recent publications include the second edition ofThe American Census: A Social History (Yale University Press, 2015); Encyclopedia of the U.S. Census: From the Constitution to the American Community Survey (ACS), 2d ed. (Washington, D.C.: CQ Press, 2011), coedited with Constance F. Citro and Joseph J. Salvo; and a coedited volume with Victor Greene, Perspectives on Milwaukee’s Past (University of Illinois Press, 2009). In 2006 she served as the President of the Social Science History Association.

Senior Editors

James Marten is professor and chair of the history department at Marquette University, Past President of the Society of Civil War Historians, and founding secretary-treasurer and President of the Society for the History of Children and Youth (2012-13). He has written or edited more than a dozen books on the sectional conflict and children’s history, including The Children’s Civil War (1998); Children and War: A Historical Anthology (2002); Childhood and Child Welfare in the Progressive Era: A Brief History with Documents (2004); and Sing Not War: The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans in Gilded Age America (2011). He was also senior co-editor of the six-volume Cultural History of Childhood and Family (2010) and director of the NEH-funded Children in Urban America Project, a digital archive on Milwaukee children’s history.

Thomas Jablonsky was born on Chicago’s South Side, attended college in both New Jersey and California, and completed his doctorate in American History at the University of Southern California, the latter a career choice made after teaching one year of high school. He served on the faculty at his alma mater for seventeen years before coming to Marquette University to head up the Institute for Urban Life. His scholarly curiosities revolve primarily around everyday life in American cities and in the rural Midwest, and in comparative approaches to the study of urban history.

Project Director

Joseph Walzer was the Project Director of the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee between 2018 and 2021. He was also a Lecturer in History and Ethnic Studies at UWM. He first joined the project as a graduate research assistant in 2013 and wrote over 30 entries for EMKE before his graduation with a Ph.D. from UWM’s History Department in 2017. He specializes in race and ethnicity in urban history with an emphasis on Milwaukee. He is revising his dissertation, “Making an Old World Milwaukee: German Heritage, Nostalgia, and the Reshaping of the Twentieth Century City,” for publication by a university press.
